গল্পের মূল পটভূমি গড়ে উঠেছে একটি পাহাড়ি বা প্রত্যন্ত অঞ্চলের নির্জন এবং কুয়াশাচ্ছন্ন উপত্যকায় অবস্থিত এক সুপ্রাচীন ব্রিটিশ আমলের বাংলোকে কেন্দ্র করে। এই বাংলোটি স্থানীয় মানুষের কাছে 'মিস ডরোথীর বাংলো' নামে পরিচিত। লোকশ্রুতি রয়েছে যে, বহু বছর আগে এখানে বসবাসকারী এক ব্রিটিশ নারী বা মেমসাহেব 'মিস ডরোথী'-র রহস্যময় মৃত্যু ঘটেছিল। সেই থেকে বাংলোটিকে ঘিরে জড়িয়ে রয়েছে নানা অলৌকিক কুসংস্কার এবং এক অভিশপ্ত ইতিহাস।
