Osman Gani's Banglabazar house, known for Liberation War books and for Humayun Azad's novels.
Agamee Prakashani was founded in Dhaka in 1986 by Osman Gani and works from 36 Banglabazar, the old quarter of the city's book trade. Its slogan, 'the Liberation War and free thought are what we publish', describes the list: by 2015 it had published about 80 books on Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and about 200 on the 1971 war.
From the 1990s it was Humayun Azad's main publisher, bringing out his novels, essays and aphorisms at the Ekushey book fair, among them Pak Sar Jamin Sad Bad in 2004, the novel after which he began to receive threats. It also publishes history, including the work of Ahmed Sharif.
The house is still active. Bangla Academy gave it the Chittaranjan Saha award in 2013 and again in 2022.
Its books are published in Dhaka. Ask the desk, and we will tell you what we can find.
Ask for any of these and our Kolkata desk will look for a copy.
