Srikrishnakirtan
Baru Chandidas; ed. Basantaranjan Ray · 1916
First edition, from the only known manuscript
A Kolkata literary society that has edited and printed Bengal's oldest texts since 1893.
The Bangiya Sahitya Parishad began on 23 July 1893 as the Bengal Academy of Literature, founded by L. Leotard and Kshetrapal Chakraborty at a house in Shobhabazar. It took its Bengali name in April 1894, with Romesh Chunder Dutt as president and Rabindranath Tagore among the vice-presidents.
Its scholars collected old manuscripts and printed them for the first time. In 1916 it published Srikrishnakirtan, edited by Basantaranjan Ray from a manuscript found in a cowshed in Bankura, and Haraprasad Shastri's edition of the Charyapada. Editions of Mangalkavya texts, Bharatchandra, Madhusudan and Bankim followed, along with its journal, Sahitya-Parishat-Patrika.
Since 1909 the Parishad has had its own building, now 243/1 Acharya Prafulla Chandra Road, with a library of about 150,000 books and some 7,000 manuscripts. It still publishes.
