Upendranath Mukhopadhyay's house of low-priced collected works, publishing in Kolkata since 1881.
Upendranath Mukhopadhyay, a devotee of Sri Ramakrishna, began with a small bookshop in Battala. In 1881 he founded Basumati Sahitya Mandir, first in Beadon Street, later in Grey Street and then Bowbazar. His aim was to bring the work of well-known writers into ordinary homes at low prices, and the house became known for its granthabali, the collected works of Bankim Chandra, Michael Madhusudan, Girish Chandra Ghosh and many others.
The same house brought out the weekly Basumati from the 1890s, the daily Dainik Basumati from 1914 and the monthly Masik Basumati from 1922. After Upendranath's death his son Satishchandra Mukhopadhyay ran it.
The firm changed hands in 1962 and was taken over by the West Bengal government in 1974. Basumati still sells its books from 166 Bepin Behari Ganguly Street and at book fairs.
