Bishwa Shahitya Kendra

Abdullah Abu Sayeed's reading movement in Dhaka, which also publishes Bengali and world classics.

About

Bishwa Shahitya Kendra, the World Literature Centre, was started in Dhaka on 17 December 1978 by the teacher and writer Abdullah Abu Sayeed, and formally inaugurated in 1980. Its aim is a reading habit: reading programmes in schools and colleges across the country, study circles, a large library and, since 1998, mobile libraries on buses.

Publishing is part of the same work. The Kendra issues three series, Bengali classics, world classics in Bengali translation and books for young readers, so that new readers can begin with the best. Its largest project is Bangalir Chintamulak Rachana Sangraha, 209 volumes of two centuries of Bengali thought.

Its building stands at 17 Mymensingh Road, Banglamotor. The Kendra received UNESCO's Jan Amos Comenius Medal in 2008.

Its books are published in Dhaka. Ask the desk, and we will tell you what we can find.
