Shuktara
Deb Sahitya Kutir (monthly) · 1948
Children's monthly; first issue March 1948
A Kolkata press since 1860: Shuktara, A. T. Dev's dictionaries and the Puja annual.
Deb Sahitya Kutir began in 1860 as the BPM Press, set up by Baradaprasad Majumdar at 21 Jhamapukur Lane in Kolkata. Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar is said to have corrected his proofs there. In 1924 Baradaprasad's son Ashutosh Dev, known as A. T. Dev, renamed it Deb Sahitya Kutir, and that year he bought the rights to Vidyasagar's Barnaparichay at a court auction.
A. T. Dev's dictionaries made the house known in Bengali homes. Since March 1948 it has published Shuktara, the children's monthly that carried Tenida stories and Narayan Debnath's Handa Bhonda and Bantul the Great; Nabakallol is its monthly for adult readers. It was among the first to publish Puja annuals, and Premendra Mitra's Ghanada first appeared in one of them, Alpana, in 1945.
The house still publishes from Jhamapukur Lane. The West Bengal Heritage Commission declared the building a heritage site in 2019.
