Bharatvarsha
Jaladhar Sen (editor) · 1913
Monthly; first issue Asharh 1320 (June 1913)
The Cornwallis Street house that published Sarat Chandra's novels and the monthly Bharatvarsha.
In the 1880s Gurudas Chattopadhyay was publishing Bengali books from the Bengal Medical Library at 97 College Street, and later from 201 Cornwallis Street, now Bidhan Sarani. As Gurudas Chattopadhyay & Sons the house published Rajanikanta Gupta, Romesh Chunder Dutt, Jaladhar Sen and many of Dwijendralal Roy's plays.
In June 1913 it launched the monthly Bharatvarsha. Dwijendralal Roy had planned it but died a month before the first issue; Jaladhar Sen edited it for twenty-six years. Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's novels appeared first in its pages and then as books from the house, among them Biraj Bou (1914), Palli Samaj (1916) and the four parts of Srikanta (1917–1933).
Bharatvarsha was still coming out in the 1940s.
The house itself is gone. Ask the desk, and we will look for its books in reprint or second-hand.
Ask for any of these and our Kolkata desk will look for a copy.
