Mowla Brothers

A Banglabazar house since the mid-1950s; first publisher of Elias's Khowabnama and of Shahidul Zahir's novels.

About

Mowla Brothers began in Dhaka in the mid-1950s; sources give 1954 or 1956. Its founder was Khan Bahadur Ziaul Haque, and at first it published mainly educational books.

Literature followed. Abdush Shakur's Kshiyaman came out in 1961, then books by Syed Shamsul Haq. In February 1996 the house published Akhtaruzzaman Elias's novel Khowabnama, and a year later his stories, Jal Swapna, Swapner Jal. Most of Shahidul Zahir's later books first appeared here, from Se Raate Purnima Chhilo (1995) to Abu Ibrahimer Mrittu (2009). The list also takes in history, politics and memoirs of the Liberation War.

The house is run today by Ahmed Mahmudul Haque from 39/1 Banglabazar, in Old Dhaka's book quarter, and by its own count has published about two thousand books. In 2015 the Bangla Academy gave it the Chittaranjan Saha award for publishing the most books of quality.

Its books are published in Dhaka. Ask the desk, and we will tell you what we can find.
