Kazi Nazrul Islam: Smritikatha
Muzaffar Ahmad
Memoir of the poet by his friend
A Kolkata publisher of the left, founded by Muzaffar Ahmad in 1939 and still trading off College Street.
The National Book Agency was set up in Kolkata on 26 June 1939 by Muzaffar Ahmad, one of the pioneer communist leaders of India, with Rebati Burman, Suren Kar and others. It started with two hundred rupees and a plan to publish Marxist and other writing, above all in Bengali.
From 1945 it also distributed Soviet books. Its list includes Muzaffar Ahmad's memoirs of the party and of his friend Kazi Nazrul Islam, Jyoti Basu's autobiography Jatadur Mone Pore (1998), the many volumes of Documents of the Communist Movement in India, and Bengali translations of Marx, Engels and Lenin. Today it is associated with the CPI(M).
The agency still trades from 12A Bankim Chatterjee Street, off College Street. It has about 250 titles in Bengali, English, Hindi and Urdu, with history, science, fiction and children's books alongside politics.
