Prothoma's first book: letters from 1971
Three newer houses: Prothom Alo's Prothoma, the bookshop-publisher Batighar, and Bengal Foundation's press.
Three houses that have made a place for serious publishing in Bangladesh since the 2000s. Prothoma Prokashan, owned by the daily Prothom Alo, was founded in 2009. Its first book was Ekattorer Chithi, letters written by freedom fighters in 1971, and it publishes Liberation War history, memoir and new fiction from Karwan Bazar, Dhaka.
Batighar (also spelled Baatighar) began on 17 June 2005 as a hundred-square-foot bookshop at Cheragi Pahar, Chattogram, founded by Dipankar Das. It began publishing around 2009 and now has shops in Chattogram, Dhaka, Sylhet and Rajshahi, one of them inside the Bishwa Shahitya Kendra building.
Bengal Publications is the publishing house of Bengal Foundation in Dhaka, with books on literature, music and the arts. All three are still publishing.
Its books are published in Dhaka. Ask the desk, and we will tell you what we can find.
Ask for any of these and our Kolkata desk will look for a copy.
