Seagull Books

Naveen Kishore's Kolkata press, begun in 1982 for theatre and film, now publishing world literature in translation.

About

Seagull Books was started in Calcutta in 1982 by Naveen Kishore, a theatre practitioner. It began as an answer to the need for an Indian publisher of theatre and the other arts, and its early books were plays and film scripts: Mrinal Sen's In Search of Famine, Badal Sircar's Three Plays, Vijay Tendulkar's Ghashiram Kotwal and Satyajit Ray's Apu Trilogy.

It carried Bengali writing to English readers. Samik Bandyopadhyay translated Mahasweta Devi's plays for Seagull, and Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak her stories. From 1994 it also published Seagull Theatre Quarterly.

Seagull Books London was set up in 2005, and the University of Chicago Press distributes the books outside India. The list now runs to world literature in translation and critical theory, and the house is still based in Kolkata.
