Sheba Prokashoni

Qazi Anwar Hussain's paperback house in Dhaka, home of Masud Rana, Kuasha and Tin Goyenda.

About

Qazi Anwar Hussain, son of the scientist and writer Qazi Motahar Hossain, started the house in Dhaka in May 1963 as Segunbagan Prakashani; by 1966 it was Sheba Prokashoni. Its first success was the adventure series Kuasha, from June 1964.

In 1966 Hussain wrote Dhongsho Pahar, the first novel about Masud Rana, a Bangladeshi spy. The series has since passed four hundred books, many adapted from Western thrillers and, in later years, written by a team of ghostwriters. Westerns followed from 1983, Rakib Hasan's teenage-detective series Tin Goyenda from 1985, then romances and Kishore Classic translations of world literature for young readers.

The aim throughout was popular paperbacks that were well written and cheap. Sheba still publishes from its office in Segunbagicha, along with the monthly Rahasya Patrika. Qazi Anwar Hussain died in 2022.

Its books are published in Dhaka. Ask the desk, and we will tell you what we can find.
