Subarnarekha

Indranath Majumdar's College Street shop for rare books, and a publisher of serious Bengali writing.

About

Subarnarekha was started by Indranath Majumdar (1933–2013), a bibliographer and collector of rare books who came to Calcutta from what is now Bangladesh. In the late 1960s, after the student hostel where he worked as librarian closed, he began trading in old books from a first-floor room on Mahatma Gandhi Road, beside College Street, and called the shop Subarnarekha.

Scholars came to it for books they could not find elsewhere, and it became a publisher too: Kamal Kumar Majumdar's books, the later issues of the little magazine Ekkhon, Binodini Dasi's memoir Amar Katha, Sumanta Banerjee's In the Wake of Naxalbari, Gautam Bhadra's histories, and books on Calcutta and on Santal history. A branch opened in Santiniketan in 1984.

Since Indranath Majumdar's death in 2013 his son Tushar Majumdar has looked after the business.
