Sumanta Banerjee (ed.) · 1987
Translated from Bengali, Hindi, Telugu and more
A small Kolkata press edited by Samik Bandyopadhyay: theatre, cinema, music, history and Bengali writing in English.
Thema is a small Kolkata publishing house that has been bringing out books since the late 1980s. Its editor is the critic Samik Bandyopadhyay, who edited books for Oxford University Press from 1973 to 1982 and for Seagull Books until 1988, and then moved to Thema.
The list follows his interests: theatre, cinema, music, cultural history and Bengali writing in English translation. Thema published Sumanta Banerjee's anthology of Naxalite poetry, Mahasweta Devi's Bashai Tudu in a translation by Bandyopadhyay and Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, selected stories of Manik Bandyopadhyay, Somen Chanda and Samaresh Basu, Upendrakishore Ray Chowdhury's tales in English, and the singer Alladiya Khan's memoir My Life. It publishes in Bengali too, among them Sudhir Chakraborty's Nirbas.
Thema was still issuing new books and reprints in the 2010s.
