University Press Limited

Mohiuddin Ahmed's Dhaka publisher since 1975: scholarship, Liberation War history and Elias's Chilekothar Sepai.

About

Mohiuddin Ahmed (1944-2021) joined Oxford University Press as its editor for Pakistan in 1969 and, after independence, ran its Dhaka branch. When OUP closed that branch in 1975, he set up University Press Limited (UPL) as its successor.

UPL is credited with bringing professional standards, and a strict regard for copyright, to publishing in Bangladesh. Its Road to Bangladesh series, begun in the early 1990s, gathers Bangladeshi, Indian and Pakistani accounts of 1971, among them J.F.R. Jacob's Surrender at Dacca. It has published Rounaq Jahan, Rehman Sobhan and Muhammad Yunus, and in 1986 Akhtaruzzaman Elias's novel Chilekothar Sepai.

In 2012 UPL published Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's Asamapta Atmajiboni and its English translation, The Unfinished Memoirs. By 2018 it had published about 1,500 books. Mahrukh Mohiuddin is its managing director.

Its books are published in Dhaka. Ask the desk, and we will tell you what we can find.
