Visva-Bharati Granthan Vibhag

The publishing department Tagore set up at Visva-Bharati in 1923, home of his collected works.

About

Rabindranath Tagore set up Visva-Bharati's publishing department, the Granthan Vibhag, in 1923 to look after the publication of his own works. Its early books carried the imprint Visva-Bharati Granthalaya, with an office on Cornwallis Street in Kolkata.

Many of Tagore's later books first appeared under its name, among them Purabi (1925), Shesher Kabita (1929), Gitabitan (1931) and the last collections of 1941. In 1939 it began Rabindra Rachanabali, his collected works: seven volumes came out in his lifetime and twenty-six by 1948.

The department still publishes as part of Visva-Bharati at Santiniketan. Of its roughly 750 titles, nearly 400 are by or about Tagore.
