P. Lal's Kolkata press for Indian poetry in English, its books bound in handloom sari cloth.
Writers Workshop was founded in Calcutta in 1958 by P. Lal (Purushottama Lal, 1929–2010), a poet and translator who taught at St Xavier's College for over forty years, with a small group of writers that included Anita Desai. Lal later said he started it because nobody was around to publish him.
It published Indian writing in English, above all poetry, and gave many writers their first book, among them Pritish Nandy's Of Gods & Olives (1967), Keki Daruwalla's Under Orion (1970), Agha Shahid Ali's Bone-Sculpture (1972) and Vikram Seth's Mappings. Lal ran it almost alone, laying out and lettering each book himself. The books were typeset on small local presses, stitched by hand and bound in handloom sari cloth. His transcreation of the Mahabharata came out from the press over many years.
Since his death in 2010 his family has kept Writers Workshop going in Kolkata.
