১৭৫৭ সালে পলাশীর যুদ্ধে সিরাজদৌল্লার পতনের পর ইংরেজরা ফোর্ট উইলিয়াম দুর্গ নির্মাণের প্রয়োজনে গোবিন্দপুরের বাবুদের জমি-বাড়ি দখল করে। পরিবর্তে বাবুদের জমি দেয় সুতানুটি অঞ্চলে— সেই থেকে কলকাতা ব্ল্যাক টাউন আর হোয়াইট টাউনে ভাগ হয়ে গেল। সুতানুটিতে বাবুদের আধিপত্য গড়ে উঠল। সামান্য ইংরেজি-জানা ইংরেজ-ঘনিষ্ঠ বাবুদের রমরমার দিন, বিলাসিতার দিন শুরু হল। বাবুদের বিলাসিতার চরম নিদর্শন দেখা গেল— বুলবুলির লড়াই, কাঙালি ভোজন, মন্দির ও প্রাসাদোপম বাড়ি নির্মাণ, দুর্গাপুজো, শোভাযাত্রা, নাচ-গান সবেতেই, বাবুয়ানির রোশনাই লাগল সংস্কৃতি জগতেও। পাথুরিয়াঘাটা ও পার্শ্ববর্তী অঞ্চলের অর্থনৈতিক ও সামাজিক ইতিহাসে বিপুল পরিবর্তন ঘটল। বাবুদের বিলাসিতার চমকপ্রদ অজস্র ঘটনাসহ অষ্টাদশ ও ঊনবিংশ শতাব্দীর পাথুরিয়াঘাটা ও তৎসংলগ্ন অঞ্চলের নিপুণ চিত্র সবিস্তারে বর্ণিত হয়েছে এই গ্রন্থে। সেই সময়কালের অজস্র ফটোগ্রাফের অন্তর্ভুক্তি গ্রন্থের মর্যাদা বৃদ্ধির দাবী রাখে।
