Stories from Bankura

Temples of fired clay

With little stone to hand, the Malla kings of Bishnupur built their 17th- and 18th-century temples in brick and dressed them in terracotta panels: epics, hunts and boats, all in fired clay.

The horse of Panchmura

The long-necked terracotta horse is made in Panchmura and the villages around it and offered at village shrines. It has become a symbol of Indian handicraft.

Stories woven on silk

Baluchari saris carry whole scenes in their pallu. The weave began in Murshidabad and lives on in Bishnupur, where it was revived in the 20th century.
