Stories from Purba Bardhaman

The owls of Natungram

In Natungram, near Agradwip, carvers turn blocks of wood into round-eyed owls, Gaur-Nitai pairs and kings and queens, painted in flat bright colour.

Curzon Gate

Bardhaman town’s arch was raised by the Maharaja in 1903 for the Viceroy’s visit. Beyond it, at Ambika Kalna on the Bhagirathi, stands a circle of 108 small Shiva temples built in 1809.
