Stories from Nadia

The clay people of Ghurni

In Ghurni, on the edge of Krishnanagar, modellers make small, startlingly lifelike clay figures — fruit sellers, fishermen, musicians — each one painted from life.

Shantipur and Phulia

Shantipur has woven fine cotton since the 15th century. Phulia, next door, took in weavers from Tangail after Partition and became the other great handloom town of Bengal.
