সুকুমার রায়ের লেখা বিখ্যাত 'পালোয়ান' কবিতার মূল বিষয়বস্তু হলো কাল্পনিক ও অতিমানবিকভাবে এক পালোয়ানের অবিশ্বাস্য শারীরিক শক্তি ও তার ভোজনরসিকতার এক হাস্যরসাত্মক ও অবাস্তব বর্ণনা। কবিতায় ষষ্ঠিচরণ নামক এক পালোয়ানের কথা বলা হয়েছে, যে খেলার ছলে যখন-তখন হাতি লোফেন। তার দেহের ওজন উনিশ মণ এবং শরীরটি লোহার মতো শক্ত। পালোয়ানের শক্তির পাশাপাশি তার খাওয়ার পরিমাণও ছিল অবিশ্বাস্য। সে রোজ স্নানের সময় পুকুর থেকে একশো জালা জল ঢালে এবং সকালের জলপান বা জলখাবার হিসেবে তিন ধামা পেস্তা খায়। সুকুমার রায়ের অন্যান্য কবিতার মতো এটিও এক অবাস্তব ও হাসির খোরাক জোগানো সৃষ্টি। মানুষের শক্তির এমন চরম ও অসম্ভব অতিরঞ্জন ছোটদের মনে আনন্দের ঢেউ তোলে এবং হাসায়।
