যে গ্রামে আমার জন্ম, বেড়ে ওঠা, পূর্ববঙ্গ থেকে উদ্বাস্তু হয়ে এপারে চলে আসা ছিন্নমূল কিছু মানুষের হাতে গড়ে ওঠা সেই গ্রামে এক সময় না ছিল ঠিকমতো রাস্তা, না ছিল এক পলক চেয়ে দেখার মতো বাড়িঘর। ইলেকট্রিসিটি তখন দূর অস্ত। সন্ধ্যে লাগতেই ঝুপসি আঁধারে ঢেকে যেত পুরো গ্রাম। আলো বলতে তখন মাটির দাওয়ায় টিমটিম করে জ্বলতে থাকা কেরোসিনের কুপি, আকাশের তারা, আর এদিক-ওদিক ছড়িয়ে থাকা কিছু জোনাকি। তাতে পথ চলা দায়। তাই সন্ধ্যে হতেই গ্রামের মানুষগুলো ঢুকে পড়ত যে যার বাড়িতে। রাতের খাওয়া সন্ধ্যের আগেই শেষ। সারাদিনের ক্লান্ত শরীর তখন বিছানার সান্নিধ্য পেতে ব্যস্ত। আর একবার তা পেলেই শান্তির ঘুম। আমাদের গ্রামটা অনেকখানি ফাঁকা জায়গাকে দুই ভাগে ভাগ করে দিয়ে উত্তর থেকে দক্ষিণে লম্বালম্বি চলে গেছে মাইল দুয়েক। পূর্ব পাশে বিরাট বিল। পশ্চিমে মাঠ। সেই মাঠটা ঢালু হতে হতে নেমে গেছে আরও একটা বিলে। আষাঢ় থেকে ফাল্গুন দুই বিলেই জল থাকত। বাকি সময় তার চওড়া বুক ভরে যেত সবুজ ফসলে। সারি সারি খেত। রাশি রাশি ফসল। এই বিলে তাই একদিকে যেমন দেখেছি জেলে বাগদিদের মাছ মারা, তেমনই দেখেছি মাটির গন্ধ গায়ে মাখা কৃষকের চাষবাস।
