দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধ সবে শুরু হয়েছে। সেই অস্থির সময়কালে অবিভক্ত ভারতবর্ষের পূর্ব, পশ্চিম, উত্তর এবং দক্ষিণ প্রান্ত থেকে কয়েকজন তরুণ-তরুণী ভাগ্যের ফেরে এসে উপস্থিত হল দক্ষিণ-পূর্ব এশিয়ার এক দ্বীপে। শুধু ভৌগোলিক অবস্থানই নয়, তরুণ-তরুণীদের আর্থ-সামাজিক অবস্থান এবং পারিবারিক পটভূমিকাও একে অপরের থেকে সহস্র যোজন দূরবর্তী। বিদেশযাত্রার কারণও প্রত্যেকের ভিন্ন। এদের মধ্যে কেউ ডাক্তার, কেউ সামরিক অফিসার, কেউ গ্রামের অশিক্ষিত দরিদ্র কিশোর, কেউ মফস্সলের কলেজ-ছুট মেধাবী ছাত্র, আবার কেউ রক্ষণশীল মধ্যবিত্ত পরিবারের পলাতকা গৃহবধূ। এদিকে ছবির মতো সুন্দর সেই দ্বীপের ভাগ্যাকাশে তখন সকলের অলক্ষে ঘনিয়ে এসেছে এক ভয়াবহ দুর্যোগের কালো মেঘ। যার নাম জাপানি অধিগ্রহণ। এই মানুষগুলো কি পারবে তাদের নিজস্ব সুখ-দুঃখ, হাসিকান্নার নিশ্চিন্ত জগতকে সেই বৃহত্তর বিপর্যয় থেকে নির্বিঘ্নে সরিয়ে রাখতে, নাকি খড়কুটোর মতো তারাও ভেসে যাবে দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধের প্রবল তরঙ্গোচ্ছ্বাসে?
